Starlight Theatre is a historic outdoor landmark located inside beautiful Swope Park. Since opening in 1950, this massive open-air venue has been a beloved Kansas City tradition for watching Broadway musicals and major concert tours under the stars.
With over seven thousand seats, Starlight offers a unique theatrical experience that combines top-tier entertainment with warm summer nights. It remains one of the last remaining historic outdoor theatres of its kind in the United States, making it a true treasure for both locals and visitors.
To make sure you stop searching and start exploring without any stress at the gate, keep these general venue guidelines in mind. Policies can vary depending on the event, so it is always smart to double check the official stadium guidelines before you arrive.
Starlight Theatre is entirely outdoors. Shows will perform rain or shine. In the case of severe weather, performances may be paused until it is safe to resume. Come prepared for the local forecast. You can bring a compact, collapsible umbrella less than 12 inches long, but you cannot open it during the performance.
To keep entry lines moving fast, Starlight uses a strict clear bag policy. You are allowed to bring one clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC bag that is smaller than 12 by 6 by 12 inches. You may also bring a small, non-clear clutch or fanny pack if it is smaller than 4.5 by 6.5 inches. Backpacks and regular dark purses will be turned away at the gates.
While the main ticket office can accept cash for advance purchases, everything inside the gates is completely cashless. All food stands, bars, and merchandise tables only accept major credit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Wallet.
Starlight Theatre shares its parking lots with the Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium inside Swope Park. General parking is usually included in the price of your ticket for Broadway shows, but there may be an extra fee for concert events. Follow the colorful signs as you enter the park area to find the closest open lot.
For most Broadway productions and concerts, the gates will open 60 to 90 minutes before the scheduled start time. Arriving early gives you plenty of time to find your parking spot, clear the security checks, and walk to your seat before the show begins.
💡 Local Insider Tip: Starlight allows each person to bring in one unopened, factory-sealed plastic bottle of water. Many local regulars freeze their water bottles beforehand. This gives you an ice-cold drink to keep you cool during those warm Kansas City summer nights.
